What is moving the dysprosium price
Licensing, not mine supply, set the move
China added dysprosium, terbium, samarium, gadolinium, lutetium, scandium and yttrium to its dual-use export control list on 4 April 2025 (Announcement 18). A second package on 9 October 2025 would have extended licensing to holmium, erbium, thulium, europium and ytterbium and to processing technology; Beijing suspended it on 7 November 2025 for one year. The April list stays in force, with China issuing general licences to selected exporters. USGS records no sustained commercial-scale heavy rare earth output in the United States in 2025 and 100% import reliance for heavy rare earths.
The reference price sits far above 2025 oxide benchmarks
USGS puts the 2025 average dysprosium oxide price at $239 per kg (Argus, 99.5% minimum), down from $257 in 2024. The $2,166 reference price is for metal, in small lots, in October 2026, so the two are not comparable one-for-one. The reference price is roughly 9.1 times the 2025 oxide average. USGS does not say what share of that gap is conversion, lot size or the 2026 price rise, so treat it as a ceiling on what small buyers of metal pay, not as a market spread.
Supply response is slow
At least five US companies were building commercial-scale heavy rare earth separation in 2025, none at sustained volume. The Department of War lent $150 million to the Mountain Pass operator for a heavy rare earth separation plant (August 2025), and an Australian producer announced a Malaysian heavy rare earth separation facility (October 2025). Ion-adsorption clay output in Brazil, with elevated terbium and dysprosium, received a $465 million US DFC loan approval in November 2025. None of these changes the 2026 balance, so the price stays hostage to licence decisions.

Where heavy rare earths come from
| Item | USGS 2026 finding | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| US net import reliance, heavy rare earths | 100% | compounds and metals, 2021–2025 |
| US imports of terbium and holmium (2021–24) | China, 100% | erbium: Germany 51%, China 40% |
| World rare earth mine output, 2025 | 390,000 t REO | China 270,000 t (69%) |
| Dysprosium and terbium output by country | not published | USGS gives no heavy rare earth split |
USGS publishes oxide-equivalent mine output for all rare earths combined, not by element. Dysprosium-specific volumes are not in the public record.

|---|---|---|
| NdFeB magnets | Main use | Added to NdFeB to keep coercivity at high operating temperatures: EV traction motors, wind generators, industrial drives |

Dysprosium price: frequently asked questions
What is the dysprosium price per kilogram today?
The dysprosium reference price is $2,166.15 per kilogram of metal as of 27 October 2026. That is +377.23% year to date and +527.43% since January 2020.
What is the price of dysprosium per gram and per ounce?
$2.17 per gram and $67.37 per troy ounce at the 27 October 2026 reference price.
Why did dysprosium prices rise so much in 2026?
China put dysprosium under export licence on 4 April 2025 and has issued licences selectively. USGS reports no sustained commercial-scale US output of heavy rare earths, so buyers outside China compete for small volumes, and the reference price now sits far above the 2025 oxide average.
Is dysprosium oxide cheaper than dysprosium metal?
Yes. USGS reports an average oxide price of $239 per kg for 2025. Metal costs more because converting oxide to metal adds processing cost and metal is traded in far smaller lots.
