Where praseodymium comes from

Sourced with neodymium

Praseodymium comes from the same bastnaesite and monazite as neodymium. Output cannot be raised independently of the rest of the light rare earth stream, which is why most supply is sold as NdPr oxide.

Substitutes and recycling

Substitutes

Neodymium is the primary substitute in magnet alloys, and USGS notes that substitutes are generally less effective for other rare earth uses.

Recycling

Limited quantities are recovered from batteries and permanent magnets (USGS).

Policy and supply security

Supply security

Praseodymium follows the NdPr supply chain: separation capacity outside China and magnet production are the bottlenecks, not mining. See the neodymium page for the US stockpile and import data.

Dated events and export-control steps are on the China export-control timeline. Listed companies with exposure: Rare earth stocks with NdPr exposure.

Praseodymium: frequently asked questions

What is praseodymium used for?

In NdFeB magnets alongside neodymium, and in smaller amounts in glass and ceramic pigments.

Why is praseodymium sold with neodymium?

The two elements occur together, separate with difficulty and go into the same magnets, so producers sell them as NdPr oxide.

How much does praseodymium cost?

The reference price is $182.21 per kg as of 27 October 2026, +26.45% year to date.
