What is moving the rhenium price

Aero-engine demand against byproduct supply

Rhenium is recovered from roasting molybdenum concentrates from porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits and from recycled superalloy scrap. Superalloys take about 80% of use, catalysts about 15%. World production was 81,000 kg in 2025 (USGS), with Chile 30,000 kg, China 20,000, Poland 10,000, the United States 9,800 and Uzbekistan 7,000. Secondary output is another 20,000–25,000 kg.

Prices roughly doubled in 2025

USGS averages for 2025: $2,600 per kg for 99.99% metal pellets (up 90%) and $2,300 for ammonium perrhenate (up 78%). The $7,401 reference price is 2.8 times the 2025 average. USGS notes that recyclers need prices consistently above $3,000 per kg to cover processing, which is a reason to expect scrap supply to rise above that level.

Critical mineral status

Rhenium was added to the final 2025 US List of Critical Minerals (90 FR 50494, 7 November 2025). US net import reliance was 75% in 2025, up from 68% in 2024.
